Carbondale is located in Jackson County at the junction of Route 13 and US Route 51.
With a population of 26,235 (2009 US Census estimate), Carbondale is known as the "Home to Southern Illinois University; home of the Salukis!" It sits adjacent to the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Shawnee National Forest and Giant City State Park, which offer a number of different activities for those who love the outdoors!
Here you will find the Salukis and the flagship campus of the state university system, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, commonly referred to as SIU. There are over 20,000 students enrolled in more than 200 different academic programs. In 2010, SIU was ranked 183 on the "Best National Universities" list and 101 in the "Top Public Universities: National Universities".
If you happen to be looking for an easy way to Chicago, just take Amtrak’s train 'The Saluki'! Amtrak, the United States passenger rail system services Carbondale with three trains per day to and from Chicago. It also has two train a day called 'The City of New Orleans' to and from New Orleans, LA and Memphis, TN!
