With a population of 26,235 (2009 US Census estimate), Carbondale is known as the "Home to Southern Illinois University; home of the Salukis!" It sits adjacent to the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Shawnee National Forest and Giant City State Park, which offer a number of different activities for those who love the outdoors!
Here you will find the Salukis and the flagship campus of the state university system, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, commonly referred to as SIU. There are over 17,000 students enrolled in more than 200 different academic programs. For 2018, SIU has been ranked 183 on the "Best National Universities" list and 101 in the "Top Public Universities.
If you happen to be looking for an easy way to Chicago, or maybe to Beale Street in Memphis or to take in the French Quarter in the Cresent City of New Orleans, just hop on any one of several Amtrak trains that make their stop in Carbondale. The Saluki services Chicago, and the City of New Orleans heads south into the Delta each day! With connections along the line, from Carbondale you can connect with destinations across the country!

Operated by the Carbondale Park and Recreation Dept., the environment makes family time funtime for all ages; from a lazy river, to deep-end diving, to the wading pool for the younger set.
